I read for a BA and MPhil at the University of Cambridge, for a DPhil at the University of Oxford. I now teach as a stipendiary lecturer at The Queen’s College and Trinity College, Oxford.
My research embraces many aspects of the ancient world, but is principally concerned with classical Latin poetry, esp. that of the Augustan and Flavian periods. At present I am working on a new edition of and commentary on the third book of Statius’ Silvae, a collection of ‘occasional’ Latin poems that celebrate in effusive style the lives and deeds of various elite Romans living in the reign of Domitian (AD 81–96). Other major research interests include textual criticism (particularly that of Tibullus and Propertius), the study of ancient poetic metre, and the history of classical scholarship.
Textual criticism, manuscripts, Latin literature, Flavian poetry, Augustan poetry
At Queen’s I teach Roman literature, at Trinity Latin. I also teach various language classes for the Faculty of Classics, both Greek and Latin.
