Congratulations to Dr Cynthia Liu

Dr. Cynthia Liu has won the 2024 SNLS Ann Moss Early Career Essay Prize for her essay ‘A Jesuit’s Latinization of Chinese ‘epigram’’. Her essay looked at Johann Adam Schall von Bell’s (SJ) Latin translation of the verse inscription on a Chinese stele gifted to him by the Shunzi emperor, arguing that his strategies of translation and allusion draw on both Greco-Roman and Chinese literary traditions and that the Latin produced in East Asia offers a fruitful avenue for expanding Neo-Latin studies. This essay is part of a larger project investigating the 16th-19th century interactions between the Greco-Roman and Classical Chinese literary traditions, especially the place of poetry at this intercultural crossroads. Her work in this area has contributed to the research activities of the Janus Project, which she co-founded earlier this year.
