An initiative launched this year on the Oxford Classics Faculty is the Janus Project, a network founded by Charis Jo and Cynthia Liu to study the intersection of Ancient East Asian and Greco-Roman texts and languages.
Over the academic year 2023-24, The Janus Project hosted a reading group on Zottoli’s Cursus litterature Sinicae and a seminar series on the theory and practice of translation in Greco-Roman and Classical Chinese translation texts. The inaugural Janus Project conference held at the Ioannou Centre in June featured papers from an international group of scholars working on points of confluence between Greco-Roman and East Asian ‘Classics.’
All Janus Project events were held in person in Oxford but offered a remote participation option, drawing an astonishingly wide audience from around the world. We welcome anyone interested in joining next year’s programme to contact us. The Janus Project is funded by a grant from the John Fell Fund.
