Journal of Juristic Papyrology
Starting from a detailed interpretation of P. Oxy. LXXVII 5123 (ad 555), I argue that the Apion estate favoured a tenancy arrangement with its enapographoi georgoi, the farmers registered on its tax-rolls. Such leases left them with a marketable surplus of the produce in remuneration, which they could sell either to their own estate or to outside parties. Contrary to the now current view of Apionic enapographoi georgoi as directly managed permanent employees or wage labourers, the evidence reviewed suggests that they were not an economically distinct and homogenous labour group.

Two petitions concerning civic magistracies by a gymnasiarch and son of a veteran

P.CtYBR inv. 505, housed in Yale University’s Beinecke Library, is a rectangular piece of papyrus preserving on its two sides the ends of two respective petitions by the same individual, Quintus Marinus Claudianus, who was a gymnasiarch of Oxyrhynchus and the son of a veteran. The front carries a draft petition concerning appointments to municipal magistracies addressed to a prefect of Egypt. On the back was copied another petition concerning the financing of spectacles by magistrates for a local festival, together with the official response. This petition was probably also submitted to a prefect, but he referred it to the deputy epistrategus for a decision. The draft and copy on the respective sides are written in different hands, and as far as we can tell from what survives, there does not seem to be any obvious connection between the subjects of the two petitions. These texts provide an interesting window on some of the challenges facing civic magistracies in the towns of Roman Egypt in the late second century CE and state authorities’ responses to them as well as new evidence for related imperial constitutions. They also present us with the son of a veteran who held an unusually high status compared to most veterans and their descendants in Roman Egypt.

Mélanges Jean Gascou: Textes et Études Papyrologiques
Publication of a papyrus in the British Library preserving a receipt issued by an actuarius of a military unit (probably the Mauri Scutarii in Hermopolis) to a new recruit. The actuarius confirms the receipt of the recruit’s certificate of appointment to the unit (probatoria), which was issued by the dux Thebaidis, and accordingly undertakes to register him in the unit’s muster-roll (matrix). The only parallel to this type of document is P.Münch. I 2 (578). The papyrus also reveals the name of a new dux Thebaidis, Flavius Heracleius Dorotheus Hypsistius Andronicus Celer Zenodotus. He is identifiable with a wealthy honorary consul in the reign of Anastasius mentioned by John Lydus.

Publication of five Greek papyri from the village of Memnonia near Thebes (modern Medinet Habu, Coptic Djeme) housed in the British Library. They date from the fifth and sixth centuries, a period that has yielded very little documentation from this site in comparison with earlier and later periods. The documents are contracts, mostly of sale, and enlarge our small body of evidence for the legal formulary, toponymy, and onomastics of this area in this period. No. 4 is a sale by an anchorite and two relatives of a building (or part of a building) designated by the novel Coptic word ptech.
