I'll be working on how the ideas of decline (physical, moral, cosmological) pervading ancient literature are inherited and reappropriated in Tolkien's work, and how this channelling of the Classical legacy into a new literary genre has filtered down into contemporary works such as George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire or Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea.

I hold a BA degree in Classics from the Universite Paris IV - Sorbonne, as well as two MA degrees in Classics and Modern Languages & Literature at the Sorbonne and the Ecole Normale Superieure (Paris).  I also studied Classics as a visiting student at Harvard University and Pisa's Scuolo Normale Superiore.  My final Masteers thesis explored the Classical legacy of Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings, and more specifically the influence of Virgil's Aeneid on the novel's depiction of journeys.
