The aim of my research is the placement of mosaic pavements back into their original context and the reconstruction of the ancient domestic space surrounding them. Focusing on floor mosaics with a distinct narrative, message, or symbolism from Roman Greece, I will excavate the intention behind the stones – namely, striving to discover the motivations behind the mosaicist and patron that influenced how individuals interacted physically and emotionally with the mosaic pavement. I will look for a consistent thread connecting mosaics geographically and chronologically. Through this research, agency will be given back to the mosaics, their makers, patrons, and viewers.
