My MPhil will focus on what it means to be Roman in late antiquity and how this changes into the Byzantine period, with an emphasis on both the self-identification of those living on the frontiers of empire, and the perception of 'Roman-ness' by those living outside of the Empire.  This will allow me to distil the concept of 'Roman-ness' from an elite preoccupation to one shared by all those living under the auspice of Constantinople.
