My thesis explores self-recognition, diverse identities and mutual aid in the Roman world by examining the organisation and the function of Roman private associations, majorly collegia. I pay particular attention to diversity within these groups and always have an eye for the marginalised: women, slaves, ex-slaves and the financially disadvantaged. Living in the era of pandemic, when we are physically more isolated than ever, I feel the urge to talk about what has sustained humankind for thousands of years: resilience and kindness.
