My research focuses on the Latin tradition of exilic literature, with a special emphasis on where, how, and why emotions manifest in these different writings. I am interested in understanding the history of emotions, and how the ancients conceived of emotions in ways similar and different to our own. My MPhil dissertation focuses on Cicero, Seneca, and Ovid, but I am also more broadly interested in the literature of the late Republic and early imperial periods, especially in looking at questions of imperialism, the boundaries of empire, ancient ideas of "civilization vs. savagery," and authors looking back on Rome from outside the city.
