My research explores how the term nefas, and the imagery surrounding it, is utilised within Late Republican to Imperial Roman Literature (1st Century BC and AD), to verbalise political, religious, and moral boundary crossing. In particular, I aim to highlight whether and how a particular poetics of nefas is developed within these time periods, and how this can be seen to correlate to changes in the socio-political climate within these time periods.
My broader research interests include the examination of religious imagery within Imperial Roman poetry, as well as the reception of Roman literature in English literature (specifically the Early Modern period).
