My Doctoral work focuses on reconceptualising Roman 'imperialism' in the Middle Republic - questioning how it should be defined, the structures and discourses that created it, the nature of Roman power and the motivations behind Roman expansion - by looking at the ideological fabric of 3rd and 2nd century Rome. I am interested, in particular, on contemporary thoughts about space, geography, time, the rituals of warfare, and the nature of power. I set the analysis of this period, fundamentally, within a framework of collective status-seeking. I am currently funded by the AHRC DTP and the Cowley Scholarship at Corpus Christi and can be found at Ertegun House.
