Academic background: I was an undergraduate at Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania. I graduated from the latter in 1979 with a B.A. in Classical Studies. I did my post-graduate work at Brown University from which I received the Ph.D. in 1985.
Research interests: I am interested in the writing of history in the Greek and Roman world, particularly the rhetorical and narratological strategies used by the historians. I am currently working on a book on Hellenistic historiography.

Teaching: I have taught at a variety of institutions in the U.S. At Oxford I have taught or team-taught graduate seminars in Thucydides, historiographical style, Hellenistic historiography, and the Roman Social War.
