My DPhil project is a study of all expressions of comparison in Homeric Greek, including comparisons whose result is a similarity or equality, and those whose result is a difference or inequality. My approach is both linguistic and literary. I am establishing a typology of all the syntactic types of comparison that appear in the Homeric epics, and I am looking at the semantics of the different kinds of comparisons, exploring, for example, what the difference is between comparatives and superlatives. Apart from these linguistic aspects, a key question of my research concerns the narrative and rhetorical function of comparisons,  and how they contribute to the artfulness of a literary composition.
