Il-Kweon Sir

My study aims to provide a reappraisal of Alcaeus as a sophisticated poet by updating the text and interpretation of his fragments and by bringing together the dominant historicising and performance-oriented approaches of the past fifty years and the recent interest in the more 'literary' aspects of lyric poetry. I argue in Part 1 ('Fresh Perspectives') for a more 'literary' approach to aspects of Alcaeus' poetry, such as epithets, metrical practice, imagery, authorship and the speaker, performance and transmission, and politics, which have previously been treated without 'literary' considerations. In Part 2 ('Text and Interpretation'), I continue this argument by focusing on individual fragments with a new text, apparatus, and interpretative and philological essays.
