Il-Kweon Sir

The study aims to update the text and interpretation of Alcaeus, which have remained largely unchanged textually since Voigt’s monumental 'Sappho et Alcaeus' (Amsterdam, 1963) despite recent attempts (e.g. Liberman’s 'Alcée' (Paris, 1999)), and interpretatively since Rösler’s 'Dichter und Gruppe' (Munich, 1980). Part I examines key aspects of Alcaeus’ poetic craft, such as the use of imagery, effects of metre and stanzaic form, use of epithets, genre, structure, and relationship to tradition, as well as treating controversies from previous scholarship in language, historical references, and performance context. Part II offers a new text and textual and interpretative comments on individual fragments.
