Thesis description: My thesis spans the fields of ancient linguistic and ancient philosophy, especially philosophy of language. I focus on some of the main subjects dealt with in Varro’s works on language: nature as a criterion for correct speech; the notion of “kinship” (societas) in language; analogy and anomaly. I investigate previous scholarly accomplishments on these subjects in the Greek classical and Hellenistic world and in Varro’s contemporary Roman landscape, weighing up what Varro was likely to have known and drawn on for his research. I analyse Varro’s reception of those ideas and highlight his own original contributions to the field.
