Research and Teaching

The Centre's epigraphical collections are in active use by three current Inscriptiones Graecae projects: IG II 3rd edition (the post-Euclidean inscriptions of Athens and Attica, for which see the project entry below) and IG XII 4, 1 (Inscriptions of Kos) and IG XII 6, 2 (Inscriptions of Chios).

Oxford University Press has agreed to establish a CSAD monograph series entitled 'Oxford Studies in Ancient Documents', the first two volumes of which, a re-edition, translation and commentary on the Lex Portorii from Ephesos, edited by Dr B M Levick and Mr M Cottier, and Ancient Archives and Archival Traditions, edited by M Brosius, the proceedings of a conference on Ancient Archives, are at an advanced stage of preparation.

The Centre invites a distinguished scholar to give a lecture each year in Trinity term in memory of the late Professor D M Lewis. The Lecture series is supported by the David Lewis Memorial Trust. A regular research seminar series on Ancient Documents Old and New is also held on Wednesday afternoons in Michaelmas and Hilary or Trinity terms.

The Centre's research activities are inseparable from its teaching role. Epigraphy and documentary papyrology courses are held throughout the year in the Centre's seminar room. In July 2001 the Centre provided the venue and resources for a highly successful International Summer School in Greek and Latin Epigraphy.
