Classics Networks for Schools

In the autumn of 2006 the Classics Faculty at the University of Oxford expanded its Outreach Programme to provide schools across the UK with greater access to University resources.

We have been building up links with schools in each county, providing talks and workshops free of charge (though any contributions towards travel expenses are always very welcome!). In order to make the most of our resources and visit more and more schools across the UK we began setting up a series of Classics Networks for Schools.

Each Classics Network for Schools (CNS) is based in a county or counties and is designed to bring together students and teachers from different schools in that area to join in shared events, focusing on the history and culture of the Mediterranean.

Each CNS has a season of events once a year, with different schools each hosting an event in turn.

Each CNS season tutors from the Classics and History Faculties at Oxford University come to the schools in that county to give a series of talks, covering a wide range of subjects relating to the Mediterranean World right across the period 2000 B.C. - present day.

All talks are suitable for GCSE and A Level History, Ancient History, English, MFL, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Theatre Studies, Classical Civilisation, Latin and Greek students.

All CNS lectures are open to all schools and are free of charge.

There is something for everyone – whether you are looking for a first introduction to the Classical world, or seeking to broaden your understanding of ancient Mediterranean culture and history and the way in which it has shaped the modern world.

If you have any queries about the CNS project or the Oxford Classics Outreach Programme in general please email the Outreach Officer Elizabeth Sandis elizabeth.sandis@classics.ox.ac.uk or telephone 01865 288172.

If you would like an Oxford speaker to come to your school as part of the CNS programme please get in touch with the Classics Outreach Officer. Also do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like to suggest a topic for a future CNS lecture or workshop, we’d be very happy to hear from you.

I do hope that you can join us for some of our events this year.

With all best wishes,
