Profile

I have taught and researched in Oxford for many years.on Roman art in general, and especially on Roman gems and Roman Britain. My Festschrift edited by L.Gilmour, Pagans and Christians from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Papers in honour of Martin Henig presented on the occasion of his 65th birthday (BAR Int.ser. 1610, 2007) contains a complete bibliography up until that date (pp.xi-xxxiv). Since that time amongst other works, papers given at conferences etc I have published an account of the gems in the collection of Henry, Prince of Wales and Charles I (Ms Ashmole 1138) in K.A. Piacenti and J.Boardman, Ancient and Modern Gems and Jewels in the collection of her Majesty the Queen (2008),co-edited a Festschrift for Professor Martin Biddle and his late wife Birthe (Martin Henig and Nigel Ramsay, Intersections: The Archaeology and History of Christianity in England 400-1200. Papers in honour of Martin Biddle and Birthe Kjølbye-Biddle (2010) and published a new edition of my book The heirs of King Verica (2010). The 10th fascicule of the Corpus of Roman Sculpture from Britain dealing with the sculpture from London and South East England which I have worked on with Penny Coombe, Francis Grew and Kevin Hayward is in press and Helen Molesworth and I are well on the way to finishing a catalogue of Roman cameos.
Apart from my interests in ancient art I have a deep concern with theology and ethics. This has led me to pursue a vocation in the Anglican Church and after two years part-time training at St Stephen’s House I was duly ordained deacon in July 2010 and expect to be priested in June 2011. I am a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, a founder member of the Voice for Ethical Research in Oxford and Vice-President of the Anglican Society for the Welfare of Animals.
Between 1997-2009 I was a Supernumerary Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford and am still a member of Common Room of the college.
I am also Honorary Visiting Professor at the Institute of Archaeology, UCL, London
