Session Title: Music, metre and language: an introduction to Roman comedy – Dr Wolfgang de Melo

As readers of Roman comedy, we tend to think of the genre principally as spoken dialogue. However, less than half of the average comedy was spoken; the rest was recited or sung. This talk is an introduction to what we know about music and verse in comedy. We will be looking at metrical and linguistic elements and see what they can tell us about the lost music of Roman comedy.
