Lucretius, De Rerum Natura IV

Not available to Mods IA or IIB.

Book IV of Lucretius’ masterwork on Epicurean philosophy deals with the causes of perception, sensation and emotion and concludes with a passionate argument for the control of one’s sexual desires. You are expected to read the whole book in Latin and study the arguments, their validity and coherence.

The paper includes passages for translation and comment; candidates are also asked to answer two essay questions.

Not all courses and papers are available in every year. The authoritative information about courses and papers can be found in the University's Examination Decrees and Regulations, published with changes each October; the version published in the October a student begins a course will be authoritative for the examinations which that student takes at the end of the course.
