How do I apply?

Application materials will be available from 1st September 2012 for admission in October 2013. You will be asked to submit a statement of purpose (for Master's courses) or research proposal (for DPhil), your academic transcript, three references, your curriculum vitae, and two specimens of written work. If English is not your first language, or you are a national of a non-EU country which is not designated by the UK Border Agency as an ‘English-speaking majority country’, you will also be required to provide documentary evidence of your proficiency in English (for more information, please see: http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses/apply/internat_students.html

It helps us in evaluating your written work samples if the items submitted show you presenting an argument and using (different types of) evidence to back up claims which you make. Surveys of published scholarship, for instance, are less informative, although a judicious summary of a complex problem may be helpful, too.

Application Deadlines

The deadline for these postgraduate courses is 18th January 2013. All applications for funding should be made by the January deadline. For further information on how to apply see Ancient History Research Programmes
For further information on how to apply see Classical Languages and Literature Research Programmes

The University has a number of application deadlines allowing applications to be assessed against each other at a series of dates throughout the academic year.
Please go to http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses/apply/application_guide.html for detailed guidance on the application process.

What role do colleges have in graduate admissions?

When making your application, you can choose either to specify a preferred choice of college or to indicate that you have no college preference.

The decision to admit for a postgraduate degree is taken by the relevant Graduate Studies Committee. If the faculty accepts you, your application then goes on to the college which you have chosen, or to a college which has been assigned to you by the Graduate Admissions Office. If this college is unable to offer you a place, you are guaranteed a place at another Oxford college.

Are there interviews?

Interviews do not form part of the admissions procedure. However, applicants (or potential applicants) are welcome to make contact with the Director of Graduate Studies, and visits to Oxford can be arranged either before or after an application is submitted.

How to Apply for Re-admission as a Continuing Student

If you are currently studying for a taught course at Oxford and applying to carry on to a research programme with no break in your study, you can do so on a re-admission form and will be exempt from paying the application fee. If there is any break in your study (even if only for a term), you will not be able to use the re-admission form and will need to submit the standard application form for graduate study and pay the application fee.

The readmission form should be completed online by following the instructions given at http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses/apply/oxford_graduates.html. It will be pre-populated with details that the University currently has on record for you, such as your personal details and your previous qualifications.
You will need to supply the following supporting materials with your application:

  • DPhil Classical Languages and Literature: 1 reference letter, research proposal
  • DPhil Ancient History (from MSt): 2 reference letters, research proposal
  • DPhil Ancient History (from MPhil): 2 reference letters, research proposal, 2 pieces of written work

You should ensure that your re-admission form and all supporting materials, including your references, are submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office in time to meet the application deadlines. If you wish to re-use materials from your Master’s application you must indicate in your readmission form which items you want to re-use.
