Oxford Classics Documentary Shorts

The first OxCDocS film-making workshop took place in the Ashmolean Museum on Tuesday 29th October 2014. Fifteen Year 12 students from schools from all over the UK came for the one-day course, to learn how to plan and film short documentaries on objects in the museum’s collection.

In the morning, a crew from Oxford’s Media Unit showed the students how to plan a storyboard for their film, after which lecturers, undergraduates and graduates from Oxford’s Faculty of Classics helped them to prepare their scripts. After lunch in an Oxford college, the students spent the afternoon filming their documentaries in the museum, being given special tours of the collection by Oxford students, and learning more about the different types of Classical degrees at the University.

The OxCDocS team were delighted by the interest in the workshop (with almost six applicants for every place) and by the enthusiasm and imagination of the Year 12 students who took part. There are plans to run the course again in the future, information with regard to this will be available on the Faculty website.

The day was generously supported by Somerville College, St John’s College, and Oxford Classics Outreach.
